Our most complete journey through Morocco. Over fifteen days you travel from Rabat and the northern coast to blue Chefchaouen, the imperial cities, the dunes of Erg Chebbi, the gorges and kasbahs of the south, the Atlantic coast at Agadir and Essaouira, and finally Marrakech and the Ouzoud waterfalls.
The pace is relaxed: a free day in Chefchaouen, guided tours of Fes and Marrakech, a full day exploring the desert and a day trip to the waterfalls. You choose your preferred room types in hotels and riads and your style of desert tent, and a 4x4 transfer to camp is available if you prefer not to ride a camel.

We meet you at Mohammed V airport or your hotel and begin with the Hassan II Mosque, built over the Atlantic with a minaret around 210 metres high. Then drive up the coast to Rabat.
In the afternoon, visit the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Kasbah of the Udayas, and walk through its peaceful Andalusian gardens.

Stop in Asilah to walk its Portuguese ramparts and mural-covered lanes, then continue to Tangier and Cap Spartel, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.
In the afternoon, drive into the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen, the famous blue town, and settle into your riad.

Enjoy Chefchaouen at your own pace. Explore the 15th-century kasbah and its garden, browse the workshops for woven blankets and goat-cheese stalls, and follow the stream to the Ras el-Maa spring.
Before sunset, walk up to the Spanish Mosque on the hillside for the best view over the blue town as the lights come on.

Leaving Chefchaouen after breakfast, the road descends through the green foothills of the Rif to Volubilis. Here you can walk the Roman streets, see the triumphal arch and admire the mosaics that still decorate the floors of the old villas.
In Meknes, visit the Bab Mansour gate, often called the most beautiful gateway in Morocco, and the vast granaries of Moulay Ismail, then drive the last hour to Fes and settle into your riad.

Spend the day in Fes with a licensed local guide. After a view over the rooftops from the Borj Sud fortress and a visit to the Mellah, head into Fes el-Bali and its maze of lanes, many too narrow for anything but donkeys.
Highlights include the Al Quaraouiyine university, the Attarine and Bou Inania madrasas, the Nejjarine square and the Chouara tannery. Many visitors also enjoy a pottery and mosaic workshop in the Ain Nokbi district, where zellige tiles are still cut by hand. The evening is free.

Leaving Fes after breakfast, you climb into the Middle Atlas, a world of cedar forests, high meadows and small Berber towns. Stop in Ifrane, with its chalets and gardens, and look for the Barbary macaques that live in the forest around Azrou.
After lunch in Midelt, the apple town, the road crosses the Tizi n'Talghemt pass and descends into the Ziz Valley, where a green ribbon of palms runs through a canyon of red rock. Continue via Errachidia and Erfoud to Merzouga and settle into your accommodation beside the dunes for the first of two nights in the desert.

One full week into your journey, this is a day to slow down in the Sahara. Your guide takes you off-road around Erg Chebbi: the old mining village of Mifis, the stony black hamada, and the tent of a nomad family, where you share mint tea and bread and hear how they move with the seasons.
After lunch in Khamlia and a Gnawa music performance, walk through the palm gardens and, in wet years, see flamingos on the Dayet Srji lake. In the late afternoon, ride your camel into the dunes (or take the 4x4 transfer) for sunset and a night in the desert camp, with dinner and drumming around the fire.
Merzouga · Tinghir · Todra Gorge · Dades Valley · Ouarzazate · About 6 hours of driving
After sunrise, drive west to Tinghir and walk into the Todra Gorge, then continue through the Dades Valley and the Valley of Roses.
Pass through the Skoura oasis and arrive in Ouarzazate for the night.

Visit Aït Benhaddou in the morning, then cross the high plateau past Taliouine, where saffron is grown, towards the Souss Valley.
Stop in Taroudant, often called 'little Marrakech' for its complete earthen ramparts and relaxed souks, then continue to the Atlantic at Agadir.

Follow the coast north past the surf town of Taghazout and through the argan forest, where you may see goats climbing the trees. Visit a women's cooperative producing argan oil by hand.
Arrive in Essaouira, a windswept port whose UNESCO-listed medina sits behind 18th-century sea bastions, and walk the Skala ramparts at sunset.

Spend the morning in Essaouira: the busy fishing harbour with its blue boats, the fish market and the woodcarvers' workshops of thuya wood.
After lunch, drive inland to Marrakech, arriving in time for an evening stroll to Jemaa el-Fna.

With a local guide, visit the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Ben Youssef Madrasa and the souks, and see the 77-metre minaret of the Koutoubia.
The afternoon is free for the Majorelle Garden, a hammam or shopping.
Marrakech · Ouzoud · Marrakech · About 5 hours of driving (round trip)
Drive north-east to the Ouzoud waterfalls, which drop about 110 metres in several tiers into a green gorge. Walk down past olive trees to the base of the falls, take a small boat ride towards the spray and look out for the wild Barbary macaques that live around the gorge.
Lunch at a terrace restaurant overlooking the water, then return to Marrakech in the late afternoon.

Spend your last evening walking along the Corniche or visiting the Morocco Mall by the ocean.

Yes, families travel with us often. Children love the camel ride and the camp. For young children we usually recommend a longer version of the route, with shorter driving days.
Comfortable clothes, a warm layer for the evenings, a hat or scarf, sunglasses, sun cream and closed shoes. For the desert night, a small backpack is enough; your main luggage stays safely in the vehicle.
Both camps have private tents with en-suite bathrooms, hot showers and comfortable bedding. The mid-range luxury camp offers a good balance between comfort and authenticity. The luxury camp adds air conditioning and heating in every tent, plus more spacious, elegantly furnished tents, so you stay comfortable on hot summer nights and cold winter ones.
